Political relations

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in May, 1987. Solomon Islands established its Honorary Consulate in New Delhi in 2003. Solomon Islands’ relations with India are friendly. Political interaction between the two countries is very comprehensive in multilateral/international forums. 

The Foreign Minister of Solomon Islands, Hon. Mr. Laurie H. Chan visited New Delhi from 17th to 20th January 2005. He had discussions with External Affairs Minister, Minister for Human Resource Development, MOS for Information Technology, MOS for Commerce & Industry. 

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Solomon Islands, Hon. Mr. Peter Shanel Agovaka, attended the Ministerial meeting on ‘Harnessing the Positive Contribution of South-South Cooperation for Development of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), held in New Delhi on 18-19 February, 2011. 

Commercial Relations 

Solomon Islands has a small economy, mainly dependent on foreign aid. Consequently, bilateral trade with Solomon Islands is insignificant. During 2010-11, the bilateral trade stood at US$ 1.01 million. 

India has been offering 15 scholarships to Solomon Islands under the Indian Technical & Economic Cooperation programme . As part of Government of India’s Regional Assistance Initiatives for Pacific Island countries, grants-in-aid totalling US$ 800,000 had been offered to Solomon Islands for supply of equipment and materials for social programmes. Out of this, US$ 169,842 has been utilized by the Government of Solomon Islands so far. India also gave cash assistance of US$ 100,000 for relief and rehabilitation of Tsunami victims in April 2007. Solomon Islands is very eager that India help her in establishment of institutions. They have sought our help in laboratories for testing ores, etc. Similarly, Solomon Islands is reframing its Constitution and have requested our help in drafting their Constitution, which is under consideration. 

Indian Community

There are presently about 20 Indian nationals in Solomon Islands, including in hospitality sector, missionary work, UN organizations and petty trade. There is also an Association of Indian Origin People in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
